12 Days of Anime: Netflix's Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters

1

Last year I saw Netflix put up yet another original anime in my anime suggestions. I love a good Godzilla movie so when I saw this I had to watch it and see how humans will survive this Godzilla. This is part 1 of the series and it was a great movie. It was a new way I saw the world when Godzilla arrives. The art style is very beautiful and to see Godzilla come to life it’s amazing how everything looks.

Spoilers ahead!

This movie takes place 20 years in the future. The movie starts that far because of Godzilla destroying cities and civilization. Humans have fled earth to live on a space station and space shuttles. Earth was left to Godzilla for the time being and like any other movie, the humans have to go back to Earth because the space stations are slowly deteriorating. People are starving and dying because of the lack of food, water, and air. Important reasons to go back to where it all started.

I was really hooked by the storyline and the main character Haruo. The dedication these people had to kill Godzilla was unparalleled. Part 1 had so many twists and turns when they landed on Earth to kill Godzilla. There were other monsters than Godzilla and no one predicted this might happen so some people were already killed.

As they were getting to know Earth and trying to know if they can adapt there before searching for Godzilla, no time was wasted. Godzilla popped up and started destroying some of the shuttles and machines. My first thought was wow as soon as we land no more than 5 minutes were already fighting the biggest threat to mankind.

So as the story progress and the fight continues they start figuring things out about how long they’ve been away from earth while watching their backs for Godzilla’s next attack. We learn that it’s been 50 years for humans but 20,000 years for Godzilla. So the entire earth’s atmosphere and air quality have changed drastically because of Godzilla. Finding out this information answers a few questions I had back on the space station.

I think the plot twist was the best part of the movie. It could be weird that I was rooting for Godzilla to win but I wanted Haruo to prove to everyone he could do this mission. When Haruo and the team kill Godzilla they start celebrating and then when their technology starts picking up strong readings of activity, everyone is just stuck looking at this mountain come to life. This is the point of the story when we find out they didn’t kill Godzilla instead they killed its child and now the Godzilla they were originally hunting for has risen and is ready to avenge its child.

The fascinating thing about this is that Godzilla has been there for 20,000 years and instead of decaying it has been adapting to the change it was making to the atmosphere. Kid Zilla gave them a run for their money but Godzilla is about to destroy everything. When Godzilla rose I could already see this is going to be a cliffhanger and with part 2 released earlier this year. I have high hopes that Haruo can figure out how to kill Godzilla but this doesn’t look promising so I can’t wait to see what’s coming.
