Jamila Woods

Jamila Woods is a very talented artist from Chicago shes a poet, vocalist and songwriter. She has a beautiful voice and the song “Blk Girl Soldier” that was released January 2016. I love music that I can connect with on many levels and this song makes me never want to give up the fight for black women.

I first heard Jamila on Sunday Candy by Donnie Trumpet & the Social Experiment last year and I searched for her and found her soundcloud and later heard her on Macklemore & Ryan Lewis song White Privilege II and then Sway in the morning interview  of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis and Jamila was a guest they bought on and then I was introduced to this song. I started digging into more about Jamila and found some spoken word videos and I became an instant fan. I would literally buy an album from Jamila if she dropped it today, I hope there is a EP or album in the works.

I feel like this song promotes the Magic Black women have and only black women will understand. The black women mentioned in the song are all women I look up to learn more about my black history. Black women are viewed so negative in whatever light we portray ourselves and to find outlets that lets us express ourselves is hard because someone will always try and destroy a space we created for us. Not only do non-black people slander us but our own black men and women puts the cherry on top and joins in. It’s heartbreaking but it builds up the fighting spirit that black women before us had and that is what creates the Black Girl Magic we have.

They will continue to try and break us but Black Girl Magic will not fall that easy.
