Play NYC x Anime NYC 2024

Anime NYC has been growing crazy fast. This year, to help enhance the gaming experience they brought Play NYC into the mix.  Play NYC is a gaming Convention that celebrates gaming culture through its initiative to bring together people who love games with the people who make them.

As someone who attended both Play NYC and Anime NYC in the past. It was nice seeing these events come together.  I’ve loved playing games since I was a little girl, and getting to take that in while I was surrounded by anime stuff felt nice.

Thoughts on Play NYC x Anime NYC 2024

I loved that the con gave the gaming section its own designated area. Normally it’s squeezed in the corner on the outskirts of the show floor. This allowed Play NYC to be side by side with Tokyo Attack Arcade (Japanese Arcade Games), and the Defend the North (Gaming Tournament).  It was nice not having to be all up under other congoers.  For germ reasons but also because I value my personal space and gamers be smelly.

There were so many games to choose from. We’re talking about video games, card games, board games, and more.  There was even an escape room. I couldn’t spend as much time in this area as I would have liked but the few games that I could test out were well worth it.

The Merits of Meritocracy:  a visual novel/story-based game where you play a ghost who inhabits an office building. You are tasked with helping workers through some problems. Each level comes with a different set of mini-games varying in style and difficulty.  This demo put me to work.

Shootlanzer (Munity): is an 80-esque 2D shoot’em up where players take control and test their reflexes as they blast their way through squadrons of Iglid soldiers. I’m not sure whether I’ve mentioned this before but I love Beat ’em Up games. So shoot’em up are right up my alley, and I had a lot of fun with this one too.  Kick ass, in a mecha-like suit. I’d love to play Shootlanzer again.

Let’s Dive into Some more Games

Creatures of War is a 2D action-horror game where you go toe to toe with dinosaurs and all sorts of creatures in search of the Delta Squad.  Equipped with guns, healing flasks, and grenades to help you along your journey.  This game gave me metal slug meets dino crisis vibes but a little more fluid. It took me some time to get the hang of this game letting Steel off on some Dino’s. I’d give this one another go too. Play NYC x Anime NYC 2024

Hero Soul (NovyJump): A JRPG-inspired adventure game that follows Cecilia Grey, the daughter of a respected adventurer.  This game was in a pixel art style which I found pretty interesting.  I was also surprised by how big the bag storage was. Moreover, the dev informed up that they were in the process of updating and releasing a newer version of this game similar to the one I demoed. The updated version will be coming down the Pipeline soon.

We also got to see a few familiar faces.  Devs we’ve met at previous events Like Big Boss, Gem Blenders TCG, and Batsui!!  There was a game called Scrambled Heart City which was (a 3 vs. 3 fighting game) that I’d love to play. The art style was cute and earned my interest off the strength of that alone.  Granted the gameplay seemed pretty fluid and fun above all else. That’s something that I can get behind.  Play NYC x Anime NYC 2024
