LCAC 2017: J-MUSIC Ensemble Performance

The J-MUSIC Ensemble is an 8 piece band consisting of drums, keyboard, bass, guitar and a horn section with two trumpets, a trombone, and saxophone. Best described through their slogan: Jazz meets J-Pop. Which essentially, is what they do. Think-polished Jazz musicians, tackling Japanese Popular Music with the horns taking the fore front, at times standing in as substitution for the human voice. Though at times, the human voice is still included because there is nothing quite like it. Overall, bringing a new perspective to the world of Japanese Music.

My first time seeing J-MUSIC Ensemble was last year at the Liberty City Anime Convention and I was blown away. And this time around, being my second, I was that much more attentive. One thing about a J-MUSIC, their concerts are an experience. And in my case, a stroll down memory lane. There nothing quite like the feeling of nostalgia coursing through your veins. That feeling in your chest which is an added bonus for a music junkie like myself.

The biggest surprise came in the form of Khrys Williams vocal performance. He sang, rapped and scat on top of playing the trumpet and keys throughout the show. I was blown away once again.
The tracklist consisted of songs from Perfume, Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, and Sonic the Hedgehog. Here were some of my favorites:

• Simple and Clean (Kingdom Hearts)
• Real Folks Blues (Cowboy Bebop)
• Crossing Field – (Sword Art Online)
• Cruel Angel’s Thesis (Neon Genesis Evangelion)
• Casino Night Zone (Sonic 2)

The only issue I had with the performance was the fact that it was pretty much a replica of last years set with the addition or like two or three new songs. I had a nice time but it would have been nice to hear a whole new set of songs. Though Cruel Angel Thesis and Real Folks Blues are always welcome. Though those tracks speak to my soul.
